Designs
The designs I create are inspired by Welsh symbols and archaeological finds, including Roman and early medieval tiles. I try to stay true to the originals, including the small quirks or slightly wonky shapes that give them character. I used reference pictures from the Amgueddfa Cymru — Museum Wales website to guide the designs.
I work with pebbles and slate, each piece chosen for its texture, shape, and colour. The natural variations in the materials make every piece unique, and the enamel I add brings out bold, glossy colours that highlight the design.
Below are some of my favourite designs and the stories behind them.
Feline - Iron Age Copper Alloy Bowl
This is a feline/cat design from a Iron Age copper bowl that was found at Cwm Beudy Mawr, Crib Goch. It is also knows as the ‘Snowdon Bowl’.
Spiral - Roman Copper Alloy Disc
This is desicribed as a decrotive roundal. It has a nice Roman spiral design. It was found in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan.
Horse - Late Roman Copper Belt Buckle
This Late Roman belt buckle and plate is decorated with many designs. I chose to include the horse heads on the buckle as one of my designs. This piece was found at Pen-y-Corddyn, Abergele.
